21st century consulting

An Organizational Development (OD) consultant acts as an agent of change for an organization. Managers seek an OD consultant’s help when a change for the better on a business or performance need levels is required (not only desired).

A good Organizational Development consultant is able to combine a thorough understanding of organizations, their systems and processes with a profound and practical understanding of human development. Far too often one of these dominates or even excludes the other, yet neither is sufficient on its own. To become an effective agent of change for organizations one needs to see and understand the whole.

Organizational Development involves the development of people, systems, and processes. OD activities, often inspired from the inside (e.g. out of a carefully crafted strategic plan), more and more frequently are impelled into existence at the boundary between an organization and its environment. No organization operates in a vacuum; it is a part of a much larger economic, social, and cultural environment, and since that environment changes constantly, today’s businesses encounter countless stressors - external stimuli for change. Within a year long-term strategies become inconsistent with what people - spread over all levels of an organization - know to be current needs of markets, clients, partners, co-workers, and suppliers.

On top of all that implementation of new strategies means changing ingrained habits, ways of doing things, and ways of thinking, and this is never easy. Never before has the success of a company depended so much on the quality of communication between people, on intelligent and applicable empowerment of employees, and on the alignment of knowledge distributed throughout an organization with strategic decision-making processes.

An Organizational Development consultant understands these dynamics. The consultant helps organizations to become agile, and to attain greater flexibility and adaptability, because change for the better, to be permanent, must be continuous.
